Have you ever known that something was going to happen, but still was shocked when it actually happened?  Well, to my dismay, I have just had that happen to me. I have been telling my fellow Republicans for months that by October, our party would start playing the race card in an effort to gin up the White vote.  Romney’s campaign co-chair and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, is the personification of this.

Last Thursday, he appeared on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell.  She asked him to give his post-debate analysis on Romney.  Sununu immediately digressed into this tirade about the president.  Mitchell was visibly stunned when Sununu said, “What people saw last night, I think, was a president who revealed his incompetence – how lazy and detached he is and how he has absolutely no idea how serious the economy problems of the country are and how he has failed to even address them.” Mitchell tried to give Sununu a chance to correct his statement by asking him, “Governor, I want to give you a chance to maybe take it back. Did you really mean to call Barack Obama, the president of the United States, lazy?”  Sununu replied, “Yes.  He didn’t want to prepare for this debate.  He’s lazy and disengaged.”  A stunned Mitchell responded, “I think there certainly was a performance issue there and whether or not he was in his best form last night, a lot of people are questioning that,” said Andrea. “But I think to call the president lazy and disengaged is another whole question.”  Sununu’s response was, “Whatever, Andrea. Whatever you want.” This is not an isolated incident with Sununu; he has a history of being a blowhard, especially when it comes to Obama.  A few months ago on a campaign conference call about small businesses, Sununu stated, “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.” Sununu said on Fox News that Obama. “has no idea how the American system functions, and we shouldn’t be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia.” On another Fox News Channel program, Sununu said, “When you’re not that bright you can’t get better prepared.” If Sununu was speaking as a private citizen, I would just ignore his ignorance and hatred. However, because he is functioning as one of Romney’s national co-chairmen, I hold him to a higher standard and level of scrutiny. And Romney should, too. Therefore, Romney should demand that Sununu to step down from any involvement in his campaign.  If Romney has any modicum of decency and principles, this should be non-negotiable. To his credit, even John McCain took a principled stand in his 2008 presidential campaign when a woman, Gayle Quinnell, crossed the line.  During the Q & A session at a McCain rally in Minnesota, Quinnell accused Obama of being an “Arab.” McCain quickly snatched the microphone away from her and said, “No ma’am.”   ”[Obama's] a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues.” McCain was roundly applauded for taking this principled stand.  Will Romney do the same?  I strongly doubt it.  Romney doesn’t have the spine to take such a principled stand.  I challenge all Republicans to denounce Sununu and demand his immediate removal from any involvement in not only the Romney campaign, but any other Republican activities. Sununu’s rhetoric is not what the Republican Party should be about and if my party cannot or will not take a principled stand, then I cannot and will not support our nominee for president.

I would have to agree with you T.J. I think it is an over-reaction to the statments of one man (changing votes). I don’t believe that the princibles of the republican part are racisit (as many blacks believe) I think they are good an helpful to all people (this is why I changed to republican back in 1992), I just saying that because of the media being so biased towards conservatives, we need to be a little more careful in “how” we say something when it comes to “the first black president”. It is a tricky situation for sure but if the republican party is to survive it will need more black Americans to see it as a friendly place to be.Thanks

Right, I get that someone else may have chosen to characterize the president differently, and I’m fine with that. Yeah, maybe Sununu is pretty tactless in the things he says, but why is it automatically racism? Why can’t he say something in a way that portrays what he sees as the truth of the matter without intending to make a racist statement? I expect such a reaction from the left, whether I like it or not. But I don’t expect that to be coming from those of us on the right. I would love to see us get beyond such pettiness. I think we are better than that. Mr. Jackson here, has not only taken the statement as racist, but he said that he EXPECTED his party to play the race card. Really? Is that what he thinks of us? Whatever he thinks of the leadership is one thing, but the members, like me, that we need to be fed racist red meat in order to get on board? That just insults me. If that’s how he views the party, why is he even a part of such a disgusting organization that would have to stoop to such a level of depravity? I just can’t respect that. I can respect that there really is racism in this world and we need to condemn it when it is truly racism, but I can’t respect finding a racism in every word or concept that has ever had a connection to racism. That just breeds division.

Unfortunatlly TJ, the media will make this an issue about race because of the history of black people being called “lazy”. I personally would not have called him lazy but incompetent maybe! TJ the problem with the republicans is mostly preception and if people like Sununu say stuff like that , it only helps to foster the perception to a lot of people that republicans are racist! I have not heard about this anyplace else but here at FJ and I hope it does not get the coverage in the media like other things that were said by the republicans. I will not change my vote based on something that this guy said because I vote on princibles and not on what someone says but if to many things like this come out I may just stay home and let the chips fall where they may.

Really? Are you saying that Sununu calling Obama lazy is playing the race card? Really? Even with the fact that Obama himself has called himself lazy and there is evidence pointing to the fact that he tried to avoid debate prep as much as possible because it was boring, and it’s still racist to point it out? This is what makes me so sick about the whole issue of racism and makes me resentful of people like you. Almost everything is racism anymore and we can’t even speak the truth because it might be viewed as racist. Maybe what Sununu said was a personal attack and insensitive, but please don’t call it racist, because it’s not. I love many of the articles on this website, but this one makes me sick. Sorry. I hope I’m not racist for saying that.
