Raping the System: Bill Cosby, Sexual Assault, and Racial Retribution

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

Bill Cosby77-year old comedian, educator and actor Bill Cosby came of age during a particularly nasty time in this country for race relations.  In the late 1940s and 1950s the regime that controlled the Jim Crow South was baring its lethal fangs in the face of increasing agitation by blacks for legal and social equality.  Though Cosby was and is widely known for taking a more conciliatory approach to race relations, one wonders if his formative experiences inside the crucible of America’s race wars may have produced a seam of resentment that ultimately spilled over into his mistreatment of women.

The Indomitable Williams Sisters

Thursday, February 19th, 2015

Tennis racquet and ballBeing an avid tennis fan, I watched with horror and great pain the 2001 tennis matches at Indian Wells, California where the Williams sisters and their father were treated as unwelcome aliens. Trying to grasp the fact that an adult audience could heckle, boo, and downright cheer Serena’s double faults and errors in the championship was a time in sporting history I was hoping to forget ever happening. For theses hisses and boos to continue during the trophy awarding ceremony was most embarrassing to where one had to conclude there was deeper meaning to this outrage against the sisters. One could understand the boos and disappointments when it was learned minutes before their semi-final match that Venus could not play due to injury, but for this behavior to continue two days later at the championship final was nothing less than un-American by the majority of people in the stands. It must be pointed out that there were cheers for Serena during the championship and a standing ovation when she overcame the crowd and Kim Clijsters to win the match in three sets.  It didn’t help matters when television sports commentators Mary Joe Fernandez and Pam Shriver boldly announced the rumors of boos and protest and so be aware. They actually tried justifying the crowd’s behavior and only added fuel to the fire through their commentary.

God Is Alive in Hollywood!

filmIn the midst of the typical theatrics surrounding the 2015 Grammys, few may remember that Christian rapper Lecrae Moore was nominated in the category of Best Rap Performance (for All I Need is You) alongside mainstream industry heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar and Eminem. Although Lamar won, Moore’s nomination was a milestone in the development of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM), which has undoubtedly come a long way since the 1960’s folk tunes of the Jesus Movement. The explosion in talent, variety and production quality in CCM raises the possibility of similar success with other art forms. Might we see a Christian film nominated for an Oscar or a Golden Globe sometime in the future?

NFL Keeps Fumbling

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

FootballI am sick and tired of all the hypocrisy swirling around pro athletes and the National Football League (NFL) in particular. With all the accusation about domestic violence and child abuse consuming the NFL, I wonder why the public wants to hold athletes to a standard that they don’t want to live by.

How Black Was Jesus?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Black Jesus TV showCan you imagine a television program airing in America that portrayed Muhammad as a foul-mouthed pothead? Given that earlier this year ABC canceled Alice in Arabia—a show about an Arab-American who goes to live with her grandparents in Saudi Arabia—because CAIR (the Council on American-Islamic Relations) complained that the show relied on stereotypes of Muslims, it seems highly unlikely. Yet Black Jesus –the latest reminder that Christianity is the only major religion it is universally permissible to denigrate—began airing August 7 on Adult Swim.

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

EMFI wrote a column three years ago titled, “Black Women No Longer Have Their Essence.” My point was that Essence, the pre-eminent magazine for Black women, had become irrelevant and an embarrassment to the Black community.

Is the NBA’s Action Against Sterling Constitutional?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

NBAThe alleged taping of LA Clippers owner, Donald Sterling’s private talk is being used to blackball him from the NBA and take a team from him which he paid for with his own money.  The US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of association and protections of personal property.  All seem to have been violated here as Mark Cuban so aptly noted in the case of Donald Sterling who has the right to be a moron.
